File Under : Hungry Work

Styling photos is like designing in real life. Instead of shuffling items around on a screen, I’m doing it with my hands, with real objects. And that is my happy place.

A lot of work goes in to preparing for a photoshoot: from mood boards, to prop collection (and creation*), to making sure all of the color stories work between the food and the props themselves. One of the client’s main requests was that all of the food had to be real and natural. We truly accomplished that here: none of the food in these shots was fake, or inedible (although, a lot of hands touched these things in the process, so whether someone wanted to eat it after was up to them!).

I worked with food stylist Nicola Davis, and one of Nando’s Master Grillers to make the food beautiful. All of the photos here were taken by the best of the best, Greg Powers.

*While we were provided a lovely collection of props and backgrounds by Nando’s HQ in South Africa, I quickly realized we didn’t have all of the perfect sizes of bowls for our needs, and so I decided to make them myself by picking up ceramics classes again. The patterned coasters were also made by me on a laser etching machine, and added an additional touch of Nando’s to the set.

Will you just look at these gorgeous, mouth-watering shots? I’m a vegetarian and they still make me hungry as heck!:

The photos are used on a large variety of items such as menus, flyers, bus stops, a-boards outside of the restaurants, on social media, and as ads in newspapers.
