File Under : Shake Your Bon-Bon

Art direction and photo styling for chocolate

When someone asks you if you want to style photos for chocolate, how can you say no?!

Håkan Chocolatier (headed by award-winning Håkan Mårtensson) wanted ‘department-store window’ style photos for his themed bonbon collections. I was asked to help just 11 days before the shoot was scheduled. Keeping the creative collisions of ingredients close in mind, I went to work on creating mood boards followed by a shot list, and then gathered, made, and painted props for the photos you see here.

The Four Elements Collection: a favorite photo, especially because we got to use dry ice and figure out how to set one of the bonbons on fire.

The Eggcellent Collection: bonbon flavors using various types of eggs! I also hand-made the stands for the bonbons here. We had to use different liquors, when I realized that water wasn’t giving us the amount of refraction of the objects that we wanted.

The Russian Roulette Collection: they all look the exact same, but one is spicy! Props made by yours truly.

The Einstein Collection: think: brain food—antioxidants, nuts, grains, etc.

The Seven Deadly Sins Collection: a kaleidoscope of sin! There’s one bonbon for each sin, including two for gluttony!

The McQueen Bee Collection: a special honey/flower collection. Making a tiny room out of honeycomb sheets with tiny furniture and tiny art was a pure delight.

The end results are wild and dazzling, and real departure from what other chocolatiers are doing with their bonbon photography.

All photographs are by the amazing photographer with whom I cannot wait to work with again, Charlie Bennet.
