Love Local

File Under : I’m Practically Leslie Knope
Working with the city I love (and live in)!
You know you’ve ~*made it*~ when your art is on trash bins around your city, AND YOU HAVE A BILLBOARD over the iconic local establishment, Franklin’s Brewery!
My partner and I moved to Hyattsville, MD from DC back in December 2020, and it’s funny how fast you can feel like a part of a community. It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s multicultural. We’ve got bike trails, so many different kinds of restaurants, breweries, stores, cute old houses. We have weekly compost pickup. Immigrants have long had a vote in local government here. And we’re just a hop skip and a jump away from DC. I love this place, and was so excited to be able to do this campaign for the city, to promote supporting our local businesses during the holiday season! I wanted to make sure the design was the right mix of a winter feel and classic Hyattsville imagery… the Googie UFO outside of our public library possibly being my favorite.
The collection of items spanned from social, printed flyers, postcards, store signage, trash bin signage, yard signs, to: THE BILLBOARD! Everything was done in both English and Español. City events such as late-night shopping, hot cocoa and caroling, and tree and menorah lightings were held throughout the month of December.
Check it out below, and LOVE LOCAL / AMA LOCAL, Y’ALL! Support your local everything! Visit Hyattsville if you haven’t yet!

Related, not related: Since moving here, I’ve started learning Spanish so I can have conversations with more of my neighbors. Duolingo for the win!
Poster hung with pride at one of the local bike shops.
The billboard art. It’s amazing how big this type is! I could hardly even fathom the point size!
A big ol’ THANK YOU to the City of Hyattsville Communications Manager Cindy Zork for making me part of this.
